Dating Services for the Disabled

Although it may be something that we do not ponder often, it is a very prevalent issue within the disabled community. I found it fascinating to read about the instruction provided for those who are disabled and seeking to date. It is such a natural human instinct that we have, to desire the love and company of another, so it seems like common sense that those who have disabilities would hold that desire as well. While I imagine that the dating websites would be convenient, I wonder whether it is just one more way our society ostracizes those with disabilities. I was glad to see that there are sites, and social events geared towards individuals with disabilities meeting others with disabilities, but I feel like it may send the message that they are only welcome to that one option which is, dating someone who has a disability like themselves. After reading these articles, what is your reaction to the services provided and the instruction given? Do you see them as beneficial or detrimental to the disabled community?

Dating Disabled Woman - What You Should Know?

Author: Peter Finch
Do you know that the elderly disabled people are shocked when they hear about disabled people dating? This is because until recent time, the society considered disabled people as asexual beings. Disabled individuals are also human beings and they also crave for love and companionship just like anyone else. Disabled people had trouble finding potential mates before and those who had severe disabilities had little or no chance of finding potential mates. It is no wonder that elderly disabled people find it shocking to hear disabled men dating disabled women.

It was never easy for a disabled woman to meet people like the rest of the normal woman. Ever since the dating agencies and online disabled websites started to work together to eradicate this problem, it has become possible for disabled women as well as men to date.

Dating disabled woman is no different than dating a "normal" woman. This is because one would find the same amount of apprehension, excitement, fun and passion when dating the disabled woman as well as a normal woman. If the woman you are dating has been confined to a wheel chair then make sure that you take her to a restaurant that offers wheel chair facilities. There are these small but important things that you will need to look into when you are dating a disabled woman.

The introduction phase is very important while dating disabled woman. This is the moment when two people would get to know each other. Try to find out how sensitive she is about her disability when you meet her for the first time. You should do this because you need to understand her before deciding to carry your relationship forward. Do not say things that would hurt her feelings and you should also not completely overlook her disability.

There are a lot of people who feel over conscious about their partners disability and they prefer not to make any comments that might make the woman uncomfortable. This kind of attitude does not make the woman feel comfortable at all. It would only make her feel inferior.

While dating a woman with disability, you should make allowances for the disability that the person may have but do not make it too obvious. Try to put a balance between the two.

While dating disabled woman, it is always better to get a good understanding of the kind of disability she has; irrespective of whether you are a normal man or whether you are a disabled man. This will help you understand your partner and make you more tuned to her needs. With this kind of mature understanding, the whole process of dating would become much more fun and it would be a thoroughly enjoyable experience for both of you.

To make the dating disabled woman much easier and comfortable, dating agencies and online dating sites are working side by side. It is because of their efforts that the darkness of yesterday has faded away and tomorrows sun is going to bring an even better future.

Top Concerns About Dating That Worry Disabled People

Author: Peter Finch
Dating can be a fun and exciting way to make new friends and find that someone special. But at the same time it can be stressful, worrying and quite difficult!

All men and women share some basic concerns. The same dating worries plague disabled people too. But in addition there are some special concerns that revolve around disability itself.

A glance at the message board of any disabled dating site reveals the host of anxieties that cloud the horizon. Dating presents a real challenge for disabled people and queries range from handling the first date to fertility issues.

Some of the common concerns are -

Self consciousness - Feeling that everyone-is-looking-at-me is quite often a constant companion of disabled singles. However, for a relationship to work, both parties have to like the other for themselves. So, while the dating partner has to look beyond the disability, the disabled person too has to stop constantly trying to assess the others reactions!

Companionship - Most singles share this concern and for those living with a limiting disability, it is one of the primary reasons for entering into a dating relationship. Finding the right partner and coping with the future as a single are a constant worry. Hence combating feelings of loneliness and a need for companionship rank high on the list of concerns.

Attitudes towards the disabled - When dating able bodied persons, disabled people are concerned about how their disability will be received. Two people may have been connecting online for a while but when they decide to meet in person, both are worried about the disability angle. They are conscious that believing something in theory and being able to live out those beliefs in reality are different ball games altogether.

And hence the fear of whether the impairment will prove repulsive and how it will affect the relationship surfaces. The dating site Lovebyrd advises -You are not defined by your disability, so do not let your disability represent you on your date.

Sustaining long term relationships - Many of those who are in dating relationships wonder whether they will be able to sustain them in the long run. For the disabled in particular, the worry is how their partner will cope with the day-to-day challenges of living with a disability.

Sexual desirability and performance - While dating, disabled people tend to be very conscious of how desirable they appear to their partner. Feelings of inadequacy and low self-image raise their ugly heads and if these thoughts are not combated successfully they can hamper the relationship and prevent both partners from having a good time.

Sexual performance can be hampered by impairment and problems like impotency and loss of libido are very real. How this will impact the relationship depends on the strength of the bond formed earlier.

Fertility issues - Fertility problems and the possibility of not being able to have children are issues that many disabled people are challenged with. The dating relationship can be affected by this and the reaction of the partner becomes vital to the continuance of the alliance.

The only solution to this is an open discussion. Do not be afraid to voice your concerns - only then will you know what the person at the other end feels. Be confident about yourself and it will all work out!

  1. I acknowledge the fact that dating sites for those who are disabled can be considered wrong for the fact that we, as a society, are saying that disabled people can only date others who are also disabled. With that in consideration, I still believe these sites to be a good thing. It provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to meet others in a low pressure way and maybe even the only way a specific person will have the opportunity of meeting a companion. When you log on to one of these sites you know you are going to find individuals who are disabled. So, I guess my point I'm trying to get across is that everyone already knows that they will be meeting someone with a disability and they are okay with that fact. That said, the sites need to be well monitored so we don't come across individuals who are trying to take advantage of another individual.

  2. I think these sites could actually have some benefitting. First of all, it gives people a chance to make friends, which some people with disabilities have problems doing in person, but could feel no fear in meeting people online (which could cause problems, but generally I think it's a good thing). Second, sometimes it's hard to find people you have things in common with. You could get to know lots of people who you normally would not meet in everyday life. So in general, I think this could be a beneficial thing to the disabled community. I do always have some concerns, however, about dating a disabled person. When their partner is not disabled, I am always scared they will get taken advantaged of because either they trust people more easily and so don't see that the person is bad or they just don't know enough or are at a low mental level to know a bad situation when it comes. There are a lot of sexual offenders on the internet, and I would be very scared if I had a friend or child who was trying to find someone to date online, because who knows how easily they could get mixed up with a sex offender. It could be very dangerous, so I guess the most important thing with these sort of websites is to figure out how to make it safe and avoid that. If I didn't have to worry about the danger, I think it would be an awesome idea.

  3. I really like this idea. It is already hard to date and adding a disability of any kind to that must make it really difficult. I feel that offering dating a dating site is a great way for singles with disabilities to meet in a comfortable and stress free environment. However, I would be extremely careful as there are some people who are not very nice and would frequent dating sites. These people would be particularly interested in joining because they would view those with disabilities as desperate and easy to take advantage of, especially if they felt that those with intellectual disabilities would frequent the sight. In the end if proper precautions are taken then the dating sites for those with disabilities it a great idea.

  4. From my experience working with and being around people with disabilities I have seen more people with disabilities date others with disabilities as well. I would assume this is because it is more comfortable and easy for them to relate to one another. For this reason, I believe these dating sites to be a wonderful way to expand a persons dating pool. Those with disabilities seeking to date others with disabilities have a much better chance of finding a compatible companion if they have a wider range of prospects. We all deserve the chance to find someone we want to be with forever, and if dating websites can help those with disabilities to do so then great! I pray that precautions are taken to help these websites be safe, but like everything else in life there is always a little risk.

  5. This is a very interesting concept that I have not heard about until now. It is hard to take one side on this discussion. I believe that everyone has a chance at love and companionship, even those who are disabled. While same may think that have dating services specifically for the disabled is not "politically correct" I think that it is. I believe that some people with disabilities would feel more comfortable on one of these sites; more comfortable than they would on a website for the general public or meeting someone on their own in person. Everyone has different personalities. So, for those with disabilities who do not agree with these websites they will be the ones with the courage and confidence to go out on their own and meet someone the old fashioned way. I know that there are certain blogs or websites I go to that have similar views or beliefs as me because I feel more comfortable there. I do not think that these websites are made to be degrading in any way but I can see how some people would be offended by it. I think that they must be beneficial for the people using them, again because they want to use them and feel comfortable using them. It helps them to meet others and just have a chance to use their social skills in a different way. I think it is great! Thank you Izzy for this post, I really enjoyed reading about it and learning something new!

  6. This is something I've had discussions about in the past and the whole idea of dating with disabilities has always been very interesting to me. I think the article is correct in that people with disabilities deserve the right to find love and companionship. All people, regardless of their physical capabilities, want and need close relationships and intimacy. I think these sites are wonderful for those with disabilities who are seeking this. These sites are not hurtful to the disabled community because it is ultimately their choice to be involved with the dating site. It is not that the the site is forcing people to only date through an anonymous cyber community, its more allowing people with similar backgrounds an opportunity to meet and communicate. I also don't think these articles are discouraging the idea of somebody without a disability, dating someone with a disability. A close family friend of mine is paralyzed from the waist down and is close to proposing to his girlfriend, who has no disabilities. I think it takes a very special set of people to look past physical disabilities such as this, but I think it works and is a relationship like any other. All in all, I think people with disabilities can and should date if they so desire, and if dating sites such as these help in the process, I'm all about 'em.

  7. I believe that dating sites created especially for people with disabilities is a great idea. These sites don't exclude them from the rest of the world of dating. They are still able to access other dating cites, but this one provides them with a choice of meeting other people with disabilities. It allows them to meet people that they would feel more comfortable with if they were to meet. Those who are disabled that have a high level of confidence could still participate in other dating sites. For those not as confident, this could be a good opportunity for them to build confidence in dating, with themselves and with their disability.

  8. Personally, I have never approved much of dating websites in the first place because I think it takes away from the face-to-face interactiveness that is a vital part of developing ourselves physiologically, but that does not mean that dating websites are wrong and do not have a good side to them. Just like most new technologies, it all depends on how they are used. I agree with dating websites for those who have disabilities as long as they are used correctly. In my opinion, it is almost never the technology that is to blame, but the way that certain people use them are. My fiancé works with those with disabilities in the workplace and she has told me how some of them are "engaged" to each other or have been "boyfriend/girlfriend" to each other for years. There is a need for companionship and a friend who understands you among those with disabilities as there is with those without them. I would like to think that we, as a society, could provide that within our communities for those with disabilities, but it looks as if sometimes that does not happen and they must reach somewhere else for that companionship. Thus, dating websites are a good way for those with disabilities to find others who can understand them and thus build healthy relationships, whether a dating one or just a friendly one, and confidence for themselves.

  9. I think that the idea of a dating site for people with disabilities is very interesting. But, I do not really like online dating services in the first place. Like James, I think that online dating eliminates face-to-face interaction. You can not see how you communicate or what it feels like to be in each other's company. What role does body language play? How do you know if your partner needs verbal appraisal or physical touch? Just because members of the relationship have disabilities does not mean that the relationship itself has to be founded on those. Despite my initial opinion in dating services, I can see how an online dating site for people with disabilities could increase their confidence and chance to have a successful relationship. They would be able to skip over the judgment and superficiality that many people feel and start the relationship based on attitudes, beliefs, and opinions instead of the looks first. I think that as long as they are careful with who they are talking to and they don't let the computer give them a false sense of who they are, then this could be a great thing for them. It is wonderful that they have a support group who can give advice and reinforce positive feelings about themselves. Like it has been stated, everyone deserves love and companionship.

  10. I think that dating sites for people with disabilities can be good. people with disabilities are just like everyone else they have the same anatomy with the same hormones that we have. of course they are going to want to go out on dates. I do think that these sites may appear like we are saying as a society that people with disabilities can only date other people with disabilites. I think that this is a false idea. everyone including people with disabilities should be able to date whoever they want. Overall though I think that dating sites for people with disabilities are a good thing as long as it does not promote the idea that they are lesser than everyone else. I also can remember experiences in high school where certain students with disabilites would ask every girl they saw on a date. sometimes the girls would be nice and sometimes they would not be. It always was a little awkward for the girl. I think that it is important as special education teachers to teach our students how to behave appropriately with the opposite sex. we can teach them social skills that can help them establish healthy relationships in the future.
